Prior to the Operation
If a cataract is to be removed,
the doctor will request some special tests. The length of the eye
will be measured by ultrasound in fractions of a millimeter. A probe
gently touches the front surface of the eye in this test, which
takes only minutes to perform. The results of this test will assist
the doctor in prescribing the proper lens implant to restore your
vision.
Behind a cloudy cataract is the retina, which must be healthy for
good vision after the operation. The retina is like the film in
a camera. The doctor may also request special tests of the retina
prior to surgery.
Thanks to modern medicines and laser therapy, persons with glaucoma
are generally not prevented from having a cataract removed.
