Glaucoma Care at Phoenixville Eye Care Specialists

Glaucoma is usually a silent, painless, chronic condition with elevated pressure inside the eye that can lead to damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is the main nerve in the back of the eye that relays sight information to the brain:

Damage to the optic nerve can cause loss of vision. Once damaged by glaucoma, the vision cannot be restored. As a result, regular eye exams are the only way to detect glaucoma, since patients do not feel pressure being elevated inside the eye or pain, and do not notice it in their vision because it initially affects only side vision. Fortunately, for most patients the condition is slowly progressive, taking years to injure your vision.

Glaucoma untreated is one of the leading causes of blindness in the USA, but early diagnosis and treatment is nearly always successful in preventing or halting damage to your vision. Risk factors for glaucoma include a family history of the disease and African-American race.

At Phoenixville Eye Care Specialists, the doctors and staff are committed to ensuring the health of your eye. Every eye exam includes an intraocular pressure check and a detailed examination of the optic nerves. Additional testing when necessary is performed in the office. All of our doctors closely monitor glaucoma problems and treat it when needed.

Treatment usually consists of eye drops but sometimes can involve laser or conventional surgery.
